English 12: In-class essay

 In-class essay:  In the following attachment, you will find a variety of essay questions.  You will be comparing or contrasting one of the stories read as a class to the "group story" you were assigned.  On Mon/Tues we will be working on the outline and on Wed/Thurs we will be writing the essay in class.  Make sure to bring your outline to class. If you are missing one of these days due to a field trip, it is your responsibility to see me to make-up the essay THIS WEEK.

Block H Grade 12

See post below with the Paul's Case questions.  I tweeted the link to the story because it's kind of hard to find on-line. You should be following  me on twitter! I'll post the link here, but it may be removed due to copyrite! Look to the Right of Webpage and it says "Story: Paul's Case" That will take you to it.

Read "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell. (Search online: poetryfoundation.org – there is a link to this on bottom corner of my website.  Then just search that site for the poem)

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1.  Find the following poetic devices: allusion (2), hyperbole (4), simile (3), alliteration (2), personification (2), metaphor (2).... for a total of 15 marks.

2.  Locate 2 shifts in the poem

3.  Who is the speaker? (give a few details what type of person you think he is)

4.  To whom is he speaking? What is he trying to convince her to do?

5.  What is he saying about time?

 

Read "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick (check the "poetry foundation" website)

English 12 Creative Writing due dates

Choose one of the creative writing topics that we have been writing at the start of each class. Expand it and polish it up, making it one of the best pieces of writing you've done all year!

Criteria: must be 400-600 words, multi-paragraph, have a good "hook" and follow the "6 traits" guidelines.

 

Block B and D: Due Monday, April 16th

Block H: Due Tuesday, April 17th

Dead Poet's Society Work:

 

Bring in a poem by one of the poets mentioned in the movie - it needs to be a different poem than from the movie.

 

Bring in or email me a photo that represents conformity, or individuality, or a picture you find poetic.  Be prepared to share.

Block E

After watching Dead Poets' Society:

For Tuesday, April 9th:

 

·      Bring in a sample poem that by one of the poets mentioned in the movie (must be different than one of the poems read in the movie).  Be prepared to share.

·      TPCASTT the poem 

 

For Thursday, April 11:

·      Take a photo or bring in a picture of one of the following:

(a) something that is poetic

(b) something that reveals individuality and freedom of thought

(c) something that shows conformity
